Pincushion Cactus or Mammillaria is one of the largest genera in the cactus family. The plants are usually small & densely spine. The plant stems from 1 cm to 20 cm in diameter and from 1 cm to 40 cm tall, clearly tuberculate.
Other common names of pincushion cactus include: Nipple cactus, Globe cactus & Fishhook cactus.
On average, it can grow to a height of up to 40 cm (15.75 in) and a diameter of up to 20 cm (7.87 in). Most plants are cylindrical, conical, round and pyramidal in shape.
Pincusion cactus is so called because it is covered in white spines over the entire surface of the plant. It is a very prickly little specimen that is best in handled with thick gloves.
Pincushion cactus is a large group of small, free-flowering cacti that are easy to care for. Densely spined, and in many types the spines are so elongated and soft that the plant appears hairy.
Soil: Mineral and sandy so not to retain excess water, avoiding plant rot.
Temperature: This cactus enjoys temperatures ranging from 70-100°F (21-37°C)
Watering
The soil remains continuously moist, but not wet or waterlogged, to prevent root rot. It can stand long periods of drought without problems.
Humidity:
Prefers low humidity conditions.
Fertilizer
Use a specific cactus fertilizer once every 2 or 3 weeks during flowering of the plant, to take advantage of its full potential.
